1982 Buick Regal Grand National -21k Miles

VIN: 1G4AJ4748CH218304

Mileage: 21,000

Title: Clean California

This 1982 Buick Grand National is one of approximately 215 examples produced for the model’s introductory year and now shows ~21,000 miles. The car was previously sold on Bring a Trailer and was subsequently acquired by its current owner in California, where it has remained since. The seller notes the car has been consistently maintained under current ownership, with no major changes or modifications since the prior sale.

Finished in two-tone Charcoal Gray and Silver Gray Firemist over a gray interior, this example retains its factory character along with documentation and low mileage that make early Grand Nationals especially sought after.

Model Background

The Grand National name was introduced to commemorate NASCAR Winston Cup Series success, including Buick’s manufacturer championship. Rather than being built on the main assembly line, 1982 Grand Nationals began as standard Regals and were sent to Cars and Concepts in Michigan for conversion.

These upgrades included:

  • Silver Gray Firemist lower-body paint

  • Red pinstriping and Grand National graphics

  • Front air dam and rear spoiler

  • Grand National badging

Exterior

The car is finished in its factory-correct two-tone Charcoal Gray and Silver Gray Firemist. Details include:

  • Factory 14″ wheels with Goodyear Eagle ST tires

  • Replacement fiberglass bumper fillers (installed under prior ownership)

  • Grand National–specific graphics and trim

  • Rear glass decal commemorating Buick’s 1981 NASCAR championship

The seller reports the car remains unchanged cosmetically since the prior BaT sale, with California ownership since.

Interior

The cabin features a gray interior with Grand National–specific touches, including:

  • Lear Siegler front bucket seats with “Grand National 6” logos

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel

  • Grand National–specific instrumentation

Factory amenities include:

  • Power windows and mirrors

  • Cruise control

  • Air conditioning (converted to R-134a)

  • AM/FM cassette stereo

The 5-digit odometer now reads ~21k miles, reflecting minimal use since the previous auction.

Powertrain

Power comes from a 4.1-liter (252ci) V6 equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor, factory-rated at:

  • 125 horsepower @ 4,000 rpm

  • 205 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm

Power is sent to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission and a 3.23:1 rear differential.

This is the pre-turbo Grand National, representing the earliest and rarest version of the nameplate before Buick transitioned to turbocharged performance models later in the decade.

Ownership & History

  • Previously sold on Bring a Trailer

  • Acquired by current owner in California, where it has remained

  • Maintained under current ownership with no significant changes since purchase

  • Mileage increased modestly from ~19k to ~21k miles

Earlier history (per prior listing):

  • Originally owned until 1996

  • Subsequently kept in Virginia and Pennsylvania

  • Clean Carfax report with mileage consistency

Documentation

Included in the sale:

  • Original build sheet

  • Body order broadcast sheet

  • Clean Carfax report

  • Clean title

Summary

With ~21k original miles, limited production of just 215 units, and documented continuity from its prior Bring a Trailer sale to current California ownership, this 1982 Grand National represents a rare and highly original example of Buick’s first Grand National.

Unlike later turbocharged models, this car offers a distinct place in Buick and AMG-era American performance history as the foundation of what would become one of the most iconic performance nameplates of the 1980s.
