When a 1991 Porsche 964 Carrera 2 arrived at Heritage Gruppe's facility in early 2025, it was already an exceptional car. What made it extraordinary was a comprehensive backdate conversion to 1960s 911 specification, combined with a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine built to outright performance standards. The result was a car that looked like a vintage competition 911 but drove like a purpose-built sports car.

Backdate conversions vary widely in quality and integrity. The best ones are built by recognized specialists, use correct-period components or faithful reproductions, and document every modification with receipts, photos, and builder correspondence. This car had all of it. The body modifications were performed by a well-known builder in Southern California; the engine build was documented from bare case to dyno sheet. The provenance was bulletproof.

Selecting the right platform was critical. We chose PCarmarket — a platform that attracts serious Porsche buyers and commands premium results for fully documented, high-quality cars. We wrote a 2,000-word description covering the car's history, modification specification, and the builder's philosophy. The listing included over 200 photographs. Bidding opened conservatively and climbed steadily over the seven-day auction period.

The final hammer price of $350,000 set a new benchmark for backdated 964s at public auction. More importantly, it confirmed what we believe about the collector car market: when you do the preparation work thoroughly and present a car with the integrity it deserves, the market responds. The seller received a wire transfer within 48 hours of auction close.
