1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR

Ford has used the name King of the Road exactly twice — once here, and not again until the 2008 GT500KR forty years later. The original was a mid-year homologation special, built in numbers small enough that a genuine example is a different proposition entirely from an ordinary Shelby.

This 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR is documented by Marti Report and finished in White, showing 58,503 miles. The car was acquired out of Florida in original, well-worn condition and has since been carefully refined into a strong, confident driver. Every upgrade is discreet and bolt-on, so the car keeps its period-correct look throughout.

Powertrain & Drivability

Modern, tunable EFI is fitted inside a carburetor-style housing, retaining the original air cleaner housing and filter. A higher-flow exhaust and muffler give the car a throaty sound, finished with factory-style tips. A period-correct OEM oil cooler is fitted, along with an aluminum oil pan lettered Cobra. The original engine remains untouched and runs healthy, and the engine bay has been detailed with OEM and reproduction OEM parts.

Brakes, Suspension & Steering

Larger disc brakes and calipers are fitted at all four corners, OEM in appearance, paired with an upgraded brake booster. Koni shocks and rear traction bars control the ride and wheel hop. Steering has been converted to a bolt-on rack and pinion setup with power assist. The car has been lowered approximately one inch for improved handling and rides on OEM-look 16" wheels.

Exterior & Interior

A front spoiler matches the factory rear spoiler, and a 1970s-style bullet mirror is fitted to the driver's side. The rear hatch release is OEM aluminum.

History

The car has been stored indoors and shown at only two events. Every upgrade was chosen for attention to detail and period-correct presentation rather than departure from it.
