1963 Studebaker Avanti

Studebaker gave this car to Rodger Ward for winning the 1962 Indianapolis 500 and declared him the first Avanti owner. Production delays meant he did not actually receive it until well after the race.

This 1963 Studebaker Avanti, chassis 63R1034, was designed by Raymond Loewy as Studebaker's bold attempt to compete with the Corvette. Power comes from a 289 cubic-inch V8 with a Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor producing 280 bhp, paired with a floor-mounted powershift automatic transmission. Factory equipment includes air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. The current owner purchased the car in 2019, becoming only its third owner.

Provenance

The car was originally presented to Rodger Ward, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, in recognition of his 1962 victory. Ward's original car was a supercharged model without air conditioning; at his request it was replaced with this air-conditioned example, better suited to daily driving in California. After Ward's passing, his son inherited the car and later consigned it to auction at RM Sotheby's, where the current owner acquired it.

Exterior & Equipment

Unique details include an aluminum racing-type radiator, Halibrand magnesium wheels, and a metal dash plaque reading "Presented to Rodger Ward 1962 '500' Winner." Michelin Radial XW4 tires are mounted to the Halibrand wheels.

Interior

The car retains most of its original upholstery along with its original radio and rear speaker.

Awards

Under current ownership the Avanti has been meticulously maintained both mechanically and cosmetically and has been shown at various events, winning numerous awards including the Designer's Choice Award at the Benedict Castle Concours.
