1972 Alfa Romeo
Sold — $75,000
Alfa built the Montreal to show what it could do, not to sell in volume. A detuned relative of the Tipo 33 race engine — a 2.6-liter quad-cam V8 with SPICA injection and dry-sump lubrication — went into a Bertone body with slatted rear quarter windows and headlight covers that retract. Very little else from 1972 looks or sounds like it.
This 1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal underwent a comprehensive restoration under current ownership, with over $60,000 spent on the work. It is finished in Arancio Orange over an off-white interior and pairs the 2.6-liter quad-cam V8 with a ZF five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The five-digit odometer shows 60,000 kilometers, approximately 37,000 miles. The car won Best in Class at The Quail — A Motorsports Gathering, and was featured in Playboy magazine in 2016.
Exterior
The car is finished in Arancio Orange, having originally left the factory in red. Exterior details include the Montreal's signature NACA hood duct, retractable headlight covers, chrome body side moldings, and the six vertical slats stacked behind each side window. Photographs of paint meter readings are included in the gallery.
Interior
The cabin is trimmed in off-white vinyl across the front bucket seats and split rear bench, contrasting with the exterior. The dashboard, center console, and door panels are color-coordinated with matching trim accents. Wear is present on the door handles.
Engine & Drivetrain
The 2.6-liter quad-cam V8 produces 197 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque, running SPICA mechanical fuel injection and dry-sump lubrication. Power reaches the rear wheels through a ZF five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The car uses independent front suspension and a coil-sprung live rear axle, with power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. It rides on 14" Campagnolo wheels wrapped in Michelin XWX radial tires.
Restoration & Service
Over $60,000 was spent on the restoration. The fuel lines, fuel pump, battery, and starter were replaced in 2021, and the SPICA fuel injection system was serviced at that time. Detailed photographs documenting the restoration process are available alongside service records.
Included in the Sale
Service records, manufacturer's literature, spare parts, and restoration photography accompany the car, along with the Best in Class plaque from The Quail and a copy of the 2016 Playboy issue featuring the car.
Note: Additional details including VIN, service records, and further photography will be provided to serious inquiries.
